Exploring the use of nonbinary scores for spelling
  • Investigated the longitudinal relation between spelling and word reading and the influence of scoring methods (manuscript in preparation)
  • Examined the relation between spelling and cognitive/literacy skills with both binary and nonbinary scores (manuscript under review)
Website Development for Scoring Spelling
  • Created “Spelling Dystance” website (link) where users can generate nonbinary spelling scores easily by uploading spelling data
  • Supervised software engineering and informatic students as a project partner
  • Won first place in the 3rd Annual ICS Project Expo at UCI ($2,300 prize)

Improving Secondary Students’ Writing in History

WRITE Center: Writing Research to Improve Teaching and Evaluation
  • Graduate Student Researcher (IES #R305C190007; PI: Carol Booth Olson)
  • Responsible for running main analyses, writing Method and Results section for a large IES-funded RCT study (manuscript in preparation)
  • Collected student writing and demographic data from 2,000+ students across two years and was responsible for data cleaning and organization
  • Conducted teacher focus group interviews and classroom observations, trained essay scorers
A Meta-Analysis of Writing Treatments for Students in Grades 6 to 12
  • Participated in large meta-analysis (link to Graham et al., 2023; 2024) focusing on writing interventions for secondary students
  • Responsible for coding items for meta-analysis and maintaining reliability

Korean-English Bilingual or Second Language Learners

Spelling Development of Korean-English Bilingual Children
  • Conducting spelling error analysis of Korean and English spelling of children
  • Investigating the role of emergent literacy skills for spelling of both languages
Literacy Development of Korean-English Bilingual Children
  • Overseeing data collection for both Korean and English assessments as lead research assistant
  • Aiming to understand how Korean and English literacy skills interrelate and influence each other as children develop both languages
Task-Based Learning for Adult Korean Heritage Speakers
  • Collaborated on study design, creating assessment materials, recruiting participants, and overseeing data collection
  • Examining the influence of different modalities of interaction while engaging in task-based language learning

Better Understanding Literacy Development

Ball Stick Bird Project (examining the effect of modality on writing skills)
  • PIs: Michael Hebert, UC Irvine; Matthew Zajic, Columbia University; Benjamin Lovett, Columbia University)
  • Collected student writing in three different modalities and various other literacy skills (spelling, word reading, vocabulary knowledge)
  • Data management and organization, training undergraduate researchers on data input and scoring
Examining relations between literacy skills for Korean EFL learners
  • Looked at whether reading and vocabulary knowledge facilitate advanced Korean English learners’ writing performance (link to paper and paper)
  • Investigated whether different types of vocabulary are needed for comprehending general and academic texts (link to paper)
  • Examined mediating relations of reading and productive vocabulary to writing (link to paper)
